Defending a dissertation for an academic degree is one of the most important stages in the life of every scientist. To do this, you need to get a certain number of points, which is defined at the legislative level. How many points do you need to get to get a PhD and a Doctor of Sciences degree? How can publications in international scientific journals help? We will tell you in today's article.
How many points are required to defend a dissertation?
In Kyrgyzstan, all the requirements for obtaining academic degrees, including the required number of points, are approved and regulated by the “Regulations on the Procedure for Awarding Academic Degrees”.
The required number of points for defending a PhD dissertation
To obtain the degree of PhD, a postgraduate student is obliged to publish the results of his/her dissertation research in the following scientific journals:
- A scientific journal included in the List of peer-reviewed scientific periodicals of the NAC.
- At least 2 articles in scientific journals indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases.
The total number of points for publications is at least 100.
The required number of points for defending a doctoral dissertation
To obtain the degree of Doctor of Sciences, a postgraduate student is obliged to publish the results of dissertation research in the following scientific journals:
- A scientific journal included in the List of peer-reviewed scientific periodicals of the NAC.
- At least 1 article in scientific journals indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases.
The total number of points for publications is at least 250.
To defend a doctoral dissertation in the form of a scientific report, you must:
- Publish a single monograph.
- Publish at least 12 articles in periodicals indexed in the Scopus or Web of Science databases.
How do I get the required number of points to defend my dissertation?
A degree candidate receives a certain number of points for each published scientific article. Publications in journals included in the international scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science have the highest rating – up to 40 points can be obtained for such an article.
Fewer points are awarded for articles published in journals included in the NAC List (their publication is mandatory for all degree candidates), as well as in Kyrgyz and international scientific journals.
If all the necessary articles, monographs and other scientific works have already been published, but there are still not enough points for a successful dissertation defence, you should pay attention to other sources of their accrual. Additional points may be awarded for presentations at scientific events (conferences), patents (inventions, utility models, certificates of copyright registration for industrial designs or computer programs), participation in editorial boards of scientific journals, publication of books, etc.
Publication of scientific articles in an international journal is your quick way to get the necessary points for defending your dissertation
Preparing for a dissertation defence involves fulfilling a number of requirements, among which the publication of scientific articles is an important one. Publishing an article in an international journal is one of the most effective ways to gain the required number of points that are taken into account during the certification of a degree candidate.
Publication in an international journal can be much faster than in a publication indexed in the Scopus or Web of Science databases. This is due to shorter review periods, less workload of editorial boards, etc. However, when choosing a scientific journal, you should pay attention to some important indicators
To achieve the desired result, you may need several such publications. At the same time, one article in journals included in Scopus or Web of Science can fully compensate for the lack of points, as such publications have the highest scientific value.
The key is to choose the right journals according to your goals and institutional requirements. The process of publishing in ranked journals can be time-consuming and requires careful preparation, including improving research methodology, meeting high standards of academic writing, and passing rigorous peer review.
