On September 18, 2024, leading trusted information and analytics company, Clarivate, unveiled a new generative AI-based product, Primo Research Assistant.
The presentation of the innovative product at the intersection of science and generative AI took place on September 18, 2024 in London. The new generative AI solution, developed in collaboration with partners from the library community, offers students and researchers unprecedentedly convenient and continuous access to information. Primo Research Assistant instantly processes natural language queries, providing enhanced access to sources and references that greatly simplifies the search process.
Senior Vice President of Ex Libris™, a company that is part of Clarivate™, Yariv Kursh said, "Primo Research Assistant utilizes responsible academic AI to provide students and researchers with access to reliable and authoritative sources. This helps stimulate their curiosity and build confidence as they expand their knowledge. In collaboration with the community, Clarivate is committed to applying AI to its maximum benefit and developing best practices for its responsible use."
Primo Research Assistant, part of the Primo Discovery platform, is built on the Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture and leverages the Ex Libris Central Discovery Index (CDI), which includes more than 5 billion records from thousands of publishers, aggregators, and repositories.
Key features:
-
semantic search and natural language queries: users can interact with the system using familiar language, making the search process simpler and more intuitive
-
artificial intelligence-based answers with source citations: the tool instantly provides answers based on the top five abstracts with access to full text and a complete list of results
-
recommendations for expanding your search: the assistant offers ideas for further research, allowing users to delve deeper into selected topics
-
multilingual query support: users can ask questions and receive answers not only in English but also in other languages.
To ensure that the product meets the needs of librarians and their users, it was developed in close collaboration with development partners. The Primo Research Assistant beta program was launched in June 2024 and has reached 18 institutions in 10 countries and regions. The group of beta testers includes representatives from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and reflects the diversity of the global academic community.
Summon Research Assistant, first introduced in June 2024, is planned for launch in the first quarter of 2025.
