First of all, conducting scientific research requires considerable resources and knowledge in the chosen field. In addition, young researchers must comply with all approved requirements for the design and content of dissertations. It is about both the structure and methodology of the research and individual standards, which may vary from university to university or country.
Today we will look at key aspects that are worth paying special attention to when writing a dissertation in order to avoid possible mistakes.
Current Requirements for a Dissertation in Kyrgyzstan
The requirements for writing dissertations for awarding an academic title are set out in the annex to the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic dated January 18, 2022 No. 12. The current norms are regularly updated on the website of the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic.
1. Originality
Scientific novelty is a key requirement of a dissertation research. It involves the creation of a new scientific direction or a significant development of a topical topic, which leads to original results. The dissertation must demonstrate innovative elements and make unique contributions to its field.
In fact, scientific novelty allows a scientist to use the term "for the first time" when describing his achievements. The research should contain original ideas and have a significant impact on the development of the chosen field of knowledge, expanding its horizons and opening up new prospects for further scientific research.
2. Backing up with documents
Dissertations can have both practical and theoretical value. Depending on the type of work, it is necessary to support the results of the study with relevant documents. For example, in a dissertation that is of practical importance, you need to provide information about how the results of your research were used in practice. These can be documents that confirm the implementation of new indicators or technologies, as well as the benefits of new products or materials.
In a dissertation with theoretical significance, it is important to formulate recommendations on how your scientific findings and results can be used.
3. Languages of writing
In accordance with the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic "On the State Language of the Kyrgyz Republic", applicants have the opportunity to write a paper in the state (Kyrgyz) or official language (Russian). However, it should be borne in mind that for works in the state language, the dissertation student must have at least 4 scientific articles for a doctoral dissertation and at least 2 articles for a candidate's dissertation, published in Kyrgyz.
4. Structure and design
It is worth noting that certain aspects regarding the structure and design of the work may vary depending on the higher education institution. To clarify the current requirements, please contact your supervisor.
The general structure of a dissertation usually includes:
- Title page: Contains general information about the dissertation (author, title, academic degree, specialty, educational institution, etc.);
- Table of Contents: A complete list of all sections, subsections, appendices, and references, including page numbers;
- List of Symbols and Abbreviations: A list of all abbreviations, symbols, and terms used in the dissertation, in alphabetical order;
- Introduction: The introductory part, which substantiates the relevance of the research topic, formulates the purpose and objectives, defines the object and subject of the research, and briefly describes the methodology and structure of the dissertation;
- Main part: Contains directly the results of the study, divided into logically related chapters. Each chapter concludes with conclusions. However, it is worth remembering that sections and subsections should not end with graphic material;
- Conclusions: Summarize the main results of the study, confirm or refute the hypotheses put forward, formulate conclusions and proposals;
- Practical recommendations: Describe possible ways to apply the results in practice;
- References: Bibliographic description of all sources of information used in the writing of the dissertation;
- Appendices: Contain supporting materials that are not included in the main text, but are necessary for a complete understanding of the study (tables, graphs, calculations, etc.).
5. Publications for doctoral dissertation
For the successful defense of a doctoral dissertation, its main results must be published in scientific journals. It is mandatory to have one article in periodicals indexed by the "Scopus" or "Web of Science" systems. The total number of points for publications must be at least 250.
If the doctoral dissertation is written in the form of a scientific report, then a monograph and at least 12 articles in periodicals indexed by the "Scopus" or "Web of Science" systems are required to defend the work. The monograph must be single-handed, with a volume of at least 10 printed sheets.
It should also be emphasized that newspaper articles, deposited manuscripts, abstracts of reports are not included in the list of published works.
6. Publications for PhD dissertation
For the defense of a PhD dissertation, there are also a number of requirements for the publication of the main results in scientific journals. In particular, it is mandatory to have at least 2 articles in professional journals indexed by the "Scopus" and "Web of Science" systems. The total number of points for publications must be at least 100.
It is worth emphasizing that no more than two articles of the applicant for a scientific degree can be placed in one edition of the print organ, the rest of the articles are not taken into account. The last publications must be published no later than one month before the submission of the dissertation to the specialized academic council.
7. Citation
Another key requirement is competent citation. When writing a dissertation, the applicant is obliged to give references to the author and the source from which he borrows theoretical materials, results, approaches or research methods. In the absence of this information, the dissertation may not be approved, and the applicant may be accused of plagiarism.
In general, the above-mentioned aspects are only a fraction of the total dissertation requirements. It is they who form the basis for its writing. However, the successful defense of a dissertation depends not only on its quality, but also on the availability of publications in recognized scientific journals and databases.
For young scientists, the publishing process can seem complicated and confusing. That is why many turn to specialists for help.
