Seminar on scientometrics by Scientific Publications
Scientific Publications held a seminar on scientometrics at Bishkek State University named after Academician Kusein Karasaev. The event took the form of a round-table discussion attended by the company’s CEO, Denys Pylypenko. The meeting discussed the topic “Features of publications in the Scopus and Web of Science databases in 2026: new trends”. The seminar was attended by young researchers, postgraduate students and university lecturers. The event was organised with the support of the Rector of BSU.
In particular, attention was paid to the following aspects:
- How to choose journals and databases?
- The Hirsch index: what is it and how can it be improved?
- What is a quartile and does it matter?
- Why should one avoid publishing in conference proceedings?
- How to avoid mistakes and save time?
The system of scientific publications in international scientometric databases in 2026 continues to undergo significant changes under the influence of new requirements for research quality, transparency of evaluation and the strengthening of ethical standards in academic activity. Platforms such as Scopus and Web of Science retain particular significance in this process. This creates a more competitive environment in which the importance of making informed choices regarding publications and adopting a critical approach to scientometric indicators is growing.
In these circumstances, it is particularly important for researchers to navigate scientific impact indicators correctly and to avoid common mistakes when selecting publications for publication. Particular attention must be paid to assessing the quality of journals and databases, as the risk of ending up in unscrupulous or merely formally indexed publications is increasing. This is precisely why modern scientific activity requires constantly updating one’s knowledge of changes in scientometric systems and a strategic approach to publishing activity.
