Preparing for your thesis defence takes a lot of time: you not only have to write the research paper itself, but also publish articles presenting its main results. How many publications are required for admission to the defence, and in which publications should they be published?

Dissertation is a complex and multifaceted task that requires considerable effort and time, as the author must carefully present all stages of their research. The preparation and successful defence of a dissertation is one of the key stages in the scientific career of every scientist.
PhD dissertation
The minimum number of scientific publications is 5.
Required:
- 1 article in scientific periodicals indexed by Scopus and/or Web of Science
- publications in scientific journals included in the List of Peer-Reviewed Scientific Periodicals of the Higher Attestation Commission
Doctor of Sciences dissertation
Minimum number of scientific publications – 15.
Required:
- 2 articles in publications indexed by Scopus and/or Web of Science

Requirements for published works
Published works must strictly correspond to the topic of the dissertation. No more than two articles by the author are allowed in one issue of the journal; others are not considered. The latest publications must be released before the dissertation is submitted to the council.
Publications equivalent to scientific articles include:
- Diplomas for discoveries.
- Patents for inventions, utility models, industrial designs.
- Certificates for computer programs and integrated circuit topologies.
- Reports presented at conferences and published in full.
The following are not counted: newspaper articles, deposited manuscripts, abstracts of reports.
Language of the dissertation
Dissertations may be written in the state or official language. For dissertations written in the state language, the following are required:
- at least 4 articles – for a doctoral dissertation
- at least 2 articles – for a candidate's dissertation
As you can see, the updated requirements do not mention the need to publish in journals of a certain quartile (Q1-Q2-Q3-Q4), which many feared. Currently, there are no requirements for publication metrics, so publication in any journals indexed in Scopus or Web of Science databases is permitted.
When choosing a journal for publication, it is necessary to carefully evaluate its reputation to avoid interaction with predatory publications. Recommendations for checking and correctly choosing a scientific journal can be found in this article.
Defending a dissertation is an important and responsible step in the career of every scientist. To successfully pass this stage, it is necessary to prepare and publish the necessary scientific articles in advance. After all, the closer to the defence, the more competition and excitement there is around publications, which leads to long queues, making it difficult to publish works on time.
