“Scientific Publications” has traditionally prepared an updated list of scientific journals that are no longer indexed in Scopus. We recommend to familiarize with the current list of publications excluded from the database.
The main reasons for discontinuation of journal indexing in the Scopus database
Scopus is one of the most prestigious scientometric databases (DB), which includes only high-quality scientific content. An independent commission carefully monitors the quality of materials published by the publications that are indexed in the system. Every month, scientific journals that no longer meet the quality standards of the database are excluded from it. The termination of indexing of journals in the Scopus database can occur for various reasons. Here are the main ones:
-
poor quality of scientific articles: journals publishing materials of low scientific level may be excluded from the database
-
violations of scientific ethics: Scopus staff regularly monitor indexed journals and their publication activities. Publications practicing plagiarism or self-plagiarism are immediately excluded from the database
-
low scientometric indicators: suspicious publication activity is detected by the Radar system, which was created to detect and prevent negative trends in the publication activity of journals: a sharp decrease or increase in the number of publications, a significant decrease in the citation rate or other key indicators.
-
violation of Scopus policy: journals that no longer meet established Scopus standards and criteria, such as quality of peer review, originality, and contribution to science, may be excluded
-
abrupt change in editorial policy: publications that abruptly change their editorial policy to less stringent standards or suddenly change the subject area of published research may also be excluded from the scientometric database.

The most common reason for the exclusion of journals from the Scopus platform is the low quality of published materials detected by Radar. A less common reason for termination of indexing is so-called "Publication Concerns" (problems related to the publication process).
Why is it important to check the indexation of a scientific journal in Scopus?
Checking the indexation of a scientific journal in Scopus before submission is important for several reasons:
-
avoiding "predatory" journals - publishing in predatory journals can damage a scientist's reputation
-
increased visibility and citation - articles published in Scopus-indexed journals receive greater reach and visibility among an international scientific audience, which contributes to increased citations
-
Regulatory compliance - the vast majority of higher education institutions have requirements to publish in Scopus peer-reviewed journals.
